What Happens to the Withdrawn Republican Candidates’ Delegates?

The main drama in the Republican presidential race turns on whether any candidate can secure the 1,237 delegates needed to clinch the nomination. One target in the delegate scramble is the set of 184 delegates committed to candidates who have dropped out of the race. They account for about 15% of the total needed to win. Rules vary by state on whether these delegates are free to back another candidate.
